About Jenny Forker
Thank you for visiting my page. I'm a photographer living in Des Moines, Iowa. Lately, I’ve been asking: what if we could always see the familiar with fresh, hungry eyes and minds, as though we’re experiencing it for the first time? I like to photograph familiar yet overlooked things in a way that inspires wonder and mystery as the viewer experiences the process of discovering the whole of the subject matter. Compositions that emphasize negative space, texture, color or tone with an abstract, sometimes painterly appearance are what I aspire to create. I love it when an image rewards the viewer for looking closely, and I hope you experience that as you view my work. Some may describe it as wabi sabi because I celebrate the imperfect nature of things, seeing striking beauty in their flaws and obvious signs of wear and atrophy. Or maybe I’m just always rooting for the underdog.
I've been taking photos for over 25 years. Although I have traveled and taken some photographs I'm very proud of, I believe it’s possible to look no further than one’s immediate surroundings to capture compelling, exciting images. Like great writers, great artists often use familiar subject matter to tell the most compelling stories.
I usually use natural light and rely very sparingly on retouching and cropping my images, preferring to bring my skills to the front-end of the process. I have used large format (Calumet), medium format (Hasselblad, Mamiya) film cameras, and I currently use a Nikon D800 camera and my iPhone.
Thanks again for visiting my page and please stay tuned for lots more to come. I look forward to hearing any feedback you might have or just to say hello. ~ Cheers, Jenny ~
